Sprouts Radio from the Grassroots is a 30-minute weekly program featuring radio programs produced at community radio stations or by other independent producers from across the country and sometimes around the world.
Detroit’s 7-acre D-Town Farm is one of the largest urban farms in the country and is associated with a “Food Warriors” program for youth age 7-12 and a “What’s For Dinner” lecture series. Its founder, Malik Kenyatta Yakini, explains why it was necessary for Detroit blacks to take ownership of the urban gardening movement, which had previously been led by whites. He describes a city of 900,000 that is served by no major grocery stores, and how a wave of gentrification is creating “two Detroits”. He feels it is less important for us to resist what we are against than to create a vision of what we are for. Love is the guiding principle of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, along with African self-determination.
