At 11:00 Jamie Rich, Director of the Out Here Now: KC LGBT Film Festival, June 22-29 at Tivoli Cinemas, joins us with UMKC doctoral candidate, Austin Williams who shares plans to produce and direct an upcoming documentary film, THE ORDINANCE PROJECT, telling the story of KCMO Ordinance 65430. As Austin writes that it was “one of the most highly contested pieces of legislation in Kansas City history. It marked a turning point, after which discrimination against gays and lesbians could no longer be ignored, and it demonstrated how homophobia and the fear of AIDS were not only intertwined — they were inseparable.” Next year marks the 25th Anniversary of “sexual orientation” being added to Kansas City’s Civil Rights Ordinance.

Also joining us is David Weeda who now lives in Maine, and was an early activist and organizer in the struggle for LGBT equality in Kansas City, and was Executive Director of The Human Rights Project. The KC LGBT Film Festival hosts a reception Thursday, June 22 at 6:00pm in the Tivoli lobby where you can meet Austin, and David, and unite with community. At 7:00pm, director Josh Howard will introduce the Film Festival’s opening night screening of the, award-winning documentary, THE LAVENDER SCARE.
