Why Did Governor Ryan Commute All The Death Sentences In Illinois? and A Conversation With Richard Tripp of Care Of Poor People

Why Did Governor Ryan Commute All The Death Sentences In Illinois?

George Ryan was Governor of Illinois from 1999 until 2003. He received national attention for his 1999 moratorium on executions in Illinois. Governor Ryan called for a commission to study the application of the death penalty in Illinois after 13 people were released from jail after appealing their convictions based on new evidence. Then just two days before leaving office in 2003, he commuted the death sentences of all 167 death row inmates to Life sentences because of his belief that the death penalty could not be administered fairly.

Today host Craig Lubow will find out from Governor Ryan how he came to the decision that he had to clear out the Illinois Death Row, what has happened in his state since he left office and his personal campaign to abolish the death penalty.

A Conversation With Richard Tripp of Care Of Poor People – How to make lemonade when life gives you nothing but lemons.

Richard Tripp has been a champion of the homeless in Kansas City and beyond for over 30 years. His experiences of starting Care of Poor People while being homeless himself and his two books have made him a celebrity across the country and the world. He has been on stage with Mark Victor Hansen of Chicken Soup For the Soul fame and Sister Theresa of Calcutta, India. Richard has been working over the last year to start a homeless newspaper in Kansas City that would inform the public about the humanity of those that are suffering and create economic opportunities for those trying to climb out of homelessness.

Life on the street is hard and chronic ailments often go untreated or even undiagnosed. Although Richards living conditions have stabilized his health has not. Today host Jeff Humfeld will talk with Richard about the prognosis for his heath and for the newspaper he is trying to start.
