New Website for KKFI Will Bring You a "Second Signal"
KKFI is building a new website in 2012 focused on providing you with fresh information on all your favorite community radio shows. The website will be your place to follow KKFI radio shows, programmer/DJ's, and events. After the new website is online, we'll be posting past episodes of public affairs programs, as well as more information about community activities from station supporters. For now...stay tuned to a computer or mobile device near you for KKFI's new website, a "second signal."
A look back to 2011...
What a year 2011 was for KKFI! Where do we start? Thanks to the exceptional financial support from listeners, donated labor from unions, and the sweat of volunteers, you brought a new transmitter online, replacing the original, 23-year old transmitter. This equipment has improved the quality and reliability of the signal. David Knopf noticed when he said, "Your signal used to fade and break up on my way to work in Richmond. Now it's clear, even 15 miles further north." Another listener said he can now pick up the KKFI signal in west Topeka. This essential equipment upgrade clears the fog -- excuse the pun -- for the next 23 years.
KKFI demonstrated it's leadership among 200 community radio stations throughout the US by hosting not one, but two, national radio events.
The Homelessness Marathon, a 14-hour radio broadcast to raise awareness about poverty in the US, was broadcast from Kansas City by KKFI 90.1 FM in February. This timely broadcast was picked up by 140 radio stations and 25 television stations.
In August, KKFI also hosted the 15th Grassroots Radio Conference that brought together over 100 community radio broadcasters, advocates and organizers to learn and share their knowledge and experience. Frieda Werden, long-time producer of the Women's International News Gathering Service and conference participant, said "KKFI is a station that has been through the fire and come out the other side stronger. You really want to hear their story. They have diversity, politics, a deep local music culture, 100,000 watts, and a really generous, diverse, and smart bunch of volunteers. And, they are right on I-35! Don't miss it!"
But wait, there are more changes to share with you!
We improved our audio stream, converting to stereo quality and increasing the bandwidth. Many listeners tune into the audio stream on their computers and phones like Paddy McKenna, who said, "Good Morning, KKFI, it's 30 minutes after midday here in Ireland. I love your station, and am a regular listener. Good luck into the future."
KKFI's staff, volunteers, and radio programmers bring you quality, crucial programs each day focusing on a range of indie music genres, including Jazz, Blues, Alt Rock, Electronic, Hip-Hop, and Latino. You share your appreciation for these shows all the time like Jim Eckett, who said, "I found this station on my way back from Saint Louis...loved the Native American music and Reggae after that!"
Award-winning local and national public affairs provide you with the news and information to help you understand a rapidly changing landscape.
And 2012 has just begun!
We are in the midst of developing a new website that promises to bring listeners and supporters of KKFI 90.1 FM.more timely information about your favorite programs...and with a fresh look. The new website represents a "second signal" for KKFI by not only highlighting KKFI radio shows and activities but also sharing content -- videos, photos, and words -- about station and community activities. Look for more news on the website in a mailbox or newsfeed near you!
