Galactic Brought New Orleans Funk to the Madrid

Back on February 3, New Orleans’ powerhouse of soul and funk Galactic invaded the Madrid in Kansas City. Opening support from Andy Frasco & the UN was excellent featuring Stanton Moore sitting in for a cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Signed, Sealed, Delivered”.  Frasco & the UN provided an incredibly high energy set of soulful tunes with a decidedly fresh approach.  The nearly hour long set closed out with an appropriate cover of Rage Against the Machine’s “Killing in the Name”.

Following Frasco, Galactic began approximately two hours of New Orleans tinged funk and jam tunes spanning most of the catalog. It was a pretty solid sampling of Galactic that helped take the chill of the early February night.  Ben Ellman provided most of the crowd interaction through the evening with Erica Falls absolutely powerful voice that commanded the stage each time she sang.

Galactic is without a doubt one of the most versatile and sonically curious bands out there.  Their willingness to bring in guests performers has given them the ability to constantly evolve while still maintaining their funky roots.

I Love KC Music – Julian Davis and the Hay-Burners and more

On January 13 2017, the weather forecast was bleak with an impending ice storm, but that did not keep excellent music from happening!  At The Westport Saloon, The Ready Brothers and Julian Davis and the Hay-Burners entertained those of us willing to brave the weather.  It was a fun night of quality roots music!  The Ready Brothers started out the night with their old time country, blue grass, and laughter.  They were cracking jokes in between songs.

Check out all of the photos HERE (Julian Davis photos are here too).  Here is a video of The Ready Brothers taken by I Love KC Music.  You can see the full set HERE from The Westport Saloon’s live feed.

Julian Davis and the Hay-Burners finished the night with a high energy three hour set of bluegrass and western swing!  When one of the bands couldn’t make it out to The Westport Saloon due to the storm, Julian Davis and the Hay-Burners stepped up and played a longer set.  This band surely has energy to burn down the house err hay!  If you want to see a band that has fantastic music and great showmanship, this band has it all.  Their chemistry on stage, passion for music and entertainment, and talent make this one of I Love KC Music’s favorite band to see live.

Check out I Love KC Music’s video HERE.  See their whole set HERE on The Westport Saloon’s live feed archive.

Minibar: Post Paradise and the Hillary Watts Riot

A couple weeks ago we had stumbled across Fort Collins band Post Paradise at the Minibar.  Our buddies in the Hillary Watts Riot and Vi Tran Band were also on the bill and we got done with our other gigs early.  So we headed over to see what was happening.  Unfortunately, we missed Vi Tran’s set, but we did manage to catch a rather catchy rock band with an unusual twist, Post Paradise.

Post Paradise is a well-oiled machine with well written and developed songs that have a distinctive radio friendly alt-rock vibe.  The “twist” is the addition of a cello. Now this isn’t simply some gimmick.  The cello adds a great harmonic element to already good, accessible tunes.  The extra layer of strings is not new territory, but this is one of the better executions I’ve ever heard.  Post Paradise has managed to create a sound where every element belongs.  It’s really quite interesting.

Check them out next time they are in town, you’d be hard pressed not to enjoy.

Freight Train, Rabbit Killer and Berwanger at Record Bar

Over at the Record Bar just before Halloween, Freight Train, Rabbit Killer and the Legion of Ghosts performed an extended set of tunes with Berwanger opening.

Berwanger started things off with a power-pop set of rock tunes in support of the newly released “Exorcism Rock”.  It’s a great album with snappy tunes and great production value. Definitely check it out.

After Berwanger finished things off, the Kris Bruders and Mark Smeltzer started the FTRK set off as the typical duo.  They set the tone for their delta blues inspired tunes before the Legion of Ghosts turned the set into a thirteen piece jam of horns, drums, keys and slide guitar in addition to Smeltzer’s DIY string instruments.  It was quite a massive sound.  In previous editions of the Legion of Ghosts the lineup was much smaller.  This time around it appeared all the stops were pulled.
