Slimewave USA! Witch Jail’s Brick Invasion

A couple weeks back Witch Jail, a decidedly surf/acid/punk/Cramps inspired act released a 7″ at the Brick.  The 7″ is the latest edition of the Too Much Rock singles series.

Side A of the release features a Witch Jail track, “Slimewave, USA!”.  The flip side is a cover of Alien Sex Fiend’s “My Brain is in the Cupboard, Above the Kitchen Sink”.  It’s very twangy surf inspired and great stuff.  Check it out around town at Witch Jail shows and record shops.

Hipshot Killer and the Electric Lungs at Davey’s

Here are some images from the Hipshot Killer and Electric Lungs show over at Davey’s a couple weeks back.  If I recall, the Lungs were shooting a video that night around the bar featuring a guy in a heart costume and another with a giant afro.  There might have been drinking involved.

Abandoned Bells at miniBar

Nightmaricana” is how Abandoned Bells describes their sound.  It’s an apt description.  But not hellish, evil nightmares the likes of Hollywood horror.  No, Abandoned Bells is a mix of very left-of-center, ghoulish, bizarro variety of Americana.  The three-piece group featuring drums, banjo, baritone guitar and vocals is one of the more unique bands currently occupying the KC scene that doesn’t get kitschy like so much “unique” music can.  The group’s songwriting ability coupled with the confidence as performers allows them to stretch out considerably within genre.  We caught the band recently playing at set down at miniBar and were not disappointed.

Minibar: Post Paradise and the Hillary Watts Riot

A couple weeks ago we had stumbled across Fort Collins band Post Paradise at the Minibar.  Our buddies in the Hillary Watts Riot and Vi Tran Band were also on the bill and we got done with our other gigs early.  So we headed over to see what was happening.  Unfortunately, we missed Vi Tran’s set, but we did manage to catch a rather catchy rock band with an unusual twist, Post Paradise.

Post Paradise is a well-oiled machine with well written and developed songs that have a distinctive radio friendly alt-rock vibe.  The “twist” is the addition of a cello. Now this isn’t simply some gimmick.  The cello adds a great harmonic element to already good, accessible tunes.  The extra layer of strings is not new territory, but this is one of the better executions I’ve ever heard.  Post Paradise has managed to create a sound where every element belongs.  It’s really quite interesting.

Check them out next time they are in town, you’d be hard pressed not to enjoy.
